From Hive to Heart! Pure honey from St Francis Bay.

Welcome to Crab’s playground. I’m Reece Peacock, and this is where all the magic happens. I work with the bees, for the bees and around the bees to harvest beautiful fynbos honey all over our beautiful St Francis Bay.

My Grandpa, Deon Marais, visited St Francis Bay as early as 1964 as a grade 8 schoolboy following his passion for fishing and surfing. He fell in love with the little village and decided he wanted to raise his family here. After he married my Nanna, Sandra, they moved to St Francis Bay in 1983 where they raised my mom (Lindsay), her sister (Nikki), and brother (Grant). Back then the roads in St Francis Bay were still all gravel. My Grandpa started Vista Construction and they have lived here ever since. 

I completed my high school career at Nico Malan High School, but soon discovered that I should rather be working out in nature. Oftentimes I was caught chilling outside while everyone else was studying....
After high school I went overseas and worked on a fish farm in Mississippi for two years. A year later I worked in the gardens on a Kibbutz in Israel....
When I returned home to my parents and my brother, Josh, on our smallholding, I discovered a newfound passion—for bees and plants! My Dad went to his Grey High reunion and met up with some old friends, one of them a beekeeper! Long story short…I went for a few beekeeping courses with John and loved every minute of it. He helped me get started with a few hives, and that is how Crab’s Gold was born. 

Many people ask about the nickname Crab. It is from school days….I ran like a crab apparently, I think… However, my running skills have improved since then…

We currently look after about 300 hives between Oyster Bay and St Francis Bay. I love that I’m able to help the environment by looking after these clever little creatures. And nothing goes to waste. After harvesting the honey, we are able to collect wax for wax strips, candles, or products, and also collect propolis from the hives, which has amazing health benefits!

My main competition is the honey badger. Although the honey badger creates havoc with our hives, they are part of our ecosystem, so we leave them be. Being part of this community makes life very special. With everyone being so helpful and welcoming, I have managed to start, and now grow Crab's Gold into a thriving little company. We supply our bees with beautiful homes, harvest their delicious honey, and then bottle it for all to enjoy... x
